About Guangzhou University
Guangzhou University is a comprehensive university named after the nationally important central city of Guangzhou. Established in 2000 through mergers, it boasts a tradition of over 90 years in education. The university leverages the opportunities of the national "Double First-Class" initiative and the high-level university construction initiatives of Guangdong Province and Guangzhou City. It aligns with the "Four Orientations" and deepens its integration with Guangzhou and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It focuses on developing new engineering, new humanities, and new teacher training programs, and is exploring advancements in new medical and agricultural sciences. Guangzhou University is a key institution in the high-level university construction plan of Guangdong province and Guangzhou city.
The university operates three campuses: Daxue Cheng (Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center) headquarter campus, Guihuagang campus, and Huangpu campus, with 30,215 full-time undergraduates and 9,287 master's and doctoral students. It offers a comprehensive range of disciplines across 26 professional colleges, covering philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, arts, and interdisciplinary fields. Guangzhou University has 14 first-level doctoral programs and professional doctoral degree programs, eight postdoctoral research stations, 34 academic master's degree programs, and 30 professional master's degree programs.
In 2024, Guangzhou University offers 78 undergraduate programs which include 43 science and engineering, 27 humanities and social sciences, and 8 arts majors. The university has 52 national and provincial first-class undergraduate majors, comprising nearly 70% of the 2024 enrollment.
Committed to strengthening its staff, the university has developed a high-quality, dynamic faculty team with 3,353 current staff members, of which 2,667 acquire professional titles and 2,120 are dedicated to teaching and research. Among these, 1,351 hold senior positions, and 1,730 possess doctoral degrees. Guangzhou University is highly proud to accommodate high-caliber talent which include six full-time members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 109 national and 107 provincial talent project awardees, and 296 municipal high-level talents.
The university strives for demand-driven, first-rate, and innovation-led development through the strategic construction focused on interconnectedness and interdisciplinary excellence. Eleven subjects are ranked in the top 1% globally by the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), with engineering in the top 0.1%. Nineteen subjects are listed in the 2024 ARWU (Shanghai Ranking) World First-Class Disciplines, and 27 subjects in the 2024 ARWU (Shanghai Ranking) "China Best Disciplines," with three in the top 7-12% nationally and 24 in the top 12-50%. The university is ranked 98th in the 2024 ARWU China University Rankings and maintains a position within the top 100 domestically since 2020. It ranks 417th globally and 78th among Chinese mainland universities in the 2024 ARWU Global Academic Rankings, 471st in the U.S. News 2024-2025 rankings, and 601-800th in the 2025 THE World University Rankings.
Guangzhou University maintains its foundational educational mission by focusing on cultivating talents who are morally and intellectually equipped, with broad horizons and a strong capability for development, valuing sports and arts. It has set up five public quality educational centers and focuses on nurturing innovative talents. The university includes 40 national and 52 provincial first-class undergraduate vocational program construction points, covering every college with national and provincial programs. It has established five major technological innovation platforms and built high-level scientific teams across various fields, significantly enhancing its research capacities. Guangzhou University maintains strong patent registrations and achievements, contributing significantly to major engineering projects and events like the Winter Olympics and Asian Games.
Adopting a strategic approach of opening to the world and leveraging Guangzhou city’s international influence as a national central city, comprehensive gateway city, and core engine of the Greater Bay Area, Guangzhou University is continuously expanding international and Hong Kong-Macao-Taiwan exchanges and collaborations, focusing on the development of the Greater Bay Area and the Belt and Road Initiative. Guangzhou University’s key international initiatives include the establishment of the Alliance of Guangzhou International Sister-city Universities (GISU) which currently comprising 27 member universities from 25 major cities in 22 countries worldwide, the official launch of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) in September 2022 in collaboration with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, extending the enrollment of international students with 92% of them coming from countries and regions along the Belt and Road.
Dedicated to developing a global networking, Guangzhou University has established cooperation with over 200 universities and research institutes in more than 30 countries and regions and co-founded 17 high-level international research cooperation platforms.
