Professor Wang Feng from the School of Physics and Materials Science has been officially nominated as an expert member of the Advisory Committee (AC) for the SKA Regional Centre Network (SRC). He will represent China in the technical advisory work for the international SKA project.
The SKA is the world’s largest radio telescope project, aiming to drive significant breakthroughs in astronomy and related scientific fields through its unparalleled observational capabilities. The SKA project has entered its construction phase, with AA0.5 already installed and undergoing commissioning. It is expected to produce scientific data after 2027.
Given the enormous data volume SKA will generate, comparable to the total global internet traffic, establishing scientific regional centers in member countries has become the only viable solution to ensure successful scientific outcomes. These centers are interconnected with the SKA Observatory via high-speed networks of 100 Gbps or more. Scientific data observed by SKA will be transmitted to the SRCs in member countries for global, reliable storage, making the SRCs the sole platforms for scientists to conduct research.
Professor Wang is a Distinguished Professor at the School of Physics and Materials Science of Guangzhou University. From 2018 to 2020, he served as the "Imaging Calibration Expert" for the SKA Organization (SKAO) and led the Scientific Data Processing (SDP) data challenge. He systematically participated in all phases of the SDP’s Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review (CDR), and bridging stages.
