Li Buyun Named “Excellent Jurist in China”

Guangzhou University, October 9, 2012:The Commendation Ceremony of “Excellent Jurist in China” is held in Beijing People’s Hall on September 26, and Mr. Li Buyun, Director of Human Rights Research Center of Guangzhou University and Honorary Fellow of China Academy of Social Science, is one of the winners of such a distinguished title. A number of honorable guests attend the ceremony and present the award to the winners, including Mr. Zhou Yongkang, Party Secretary of CPC of Central Politics and Law Commission, Mr. Wang Lequan, Deputy Party Secretary of CPC of Central Politics and Law Commission, and Mr. Cao Jianming, Procurator General of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate.

It is the first time for China to present the award of “Excellent Jurist in China” since the establishment of People’s Republic of China. It aims to praise the jurists who have been long dedicated to the development of the law system and legal governance system in China, so it is a heavy-weight honor nationwide. Totally, 25 winners get the title of “Excellent Jurist in China” and Mr. Li Buyun is the only winner from South China.

Mr. Li Buyun is the Director of Human Rights Research Center of Guangzhou University and Honorary Fellow of China Academy of Social Science, and he also holds other professional titles in the field of law. He is one of the pioneers to focus on human rights issues in China, and he published an article Uphold Equality of People’s Rights of Law on People’s Daily on December 6, 1978, which is widely considered as the first article in China to achieve breakthrough in discussing a tender topic related to taboos of ethnic and morality in law. He then continued to take active role in promoting human rights in China, and he finally put human rights into the Constitution in China, thus making significant contribution.
