Guangzhou University, June 6, 2012:Confucius Institute jointly-built by GU and Weslevan College is going on smoothly due to the concerted efforts of the parties involved, with the signing ceremony of agreement held on June 4 between China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (NOCFL) and Weslevan College. It signifies that the Confucius Institute gains regulatory approval.

GU began to cooperate with Weslevan College on the Confucius Institute in March 2012 and Weslevan College has been showing huge enthusiasm on the cooperation since then. PresidentMichael S. Roth and her delegation visited GU and signed a Cooperation Agreement with us on June 1, and continued to visit in Beijing together with Mr. Qu Shaobing, Director of Guangzhou Education Bureau, Mr. Yu Jiangshe, President of GU, Ms Chen Shuang, Vice President of GU, Mr. Farr, Vice President of Weslevan College, and other delegates on June 4. During the visit, Ms. Xu Lin, Director of NOCFL listened to the work report presented by President Yu Jiangshe and Mr. Qu Shaobing, and accepted the application from President Lucy after she reported on Weslevan College’s preparation for the Confucius Institute. Ms. Xu Lin then gave positive remarks to GU and Weslevan College on their efficient preparation. On the one hand, she highly recognized the achievement of GU and the city of Guangzhou as a whole in promoting Chinese language in the international community and encouraged them to carry on making more progress. On the other hand, she believed Weslevan College is able to build a distinctive Confucius Institute with its long-term sound relationship with China.
A signing ceremony of agreement was held after the meeting, representing GU and Weslevan College gained regulatory approval to jointly build the Confucius Institute which is scheduled to be in operation at the second half of next year.
