Guangzhou University and Zhongshan People's Hospital Establish Joint Research Institute of Medical Life Sciences

Guangzhou University and Zhongshan People’s Hospital signed agreement on establishing a joint Research Institute of Medical Life Sciences on May 8. Guangzhou University President Wei Minghai and the head of Zhongshan People's Hospital Yuan Yong signed the agreement on behalf of the two parties. Xu Xiaoli, Deputy Mayor of Zhongshan, Qu Shaobing, Chairman of Guangzhou University Council and Liang Weihua, Director of Zhongshan Health Bureau, witnessed the signing ceremony.

       The cooperation actively promotes scientific research cooperation in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies such as gene editing and gene therapy, bioinformatics and precision therapy. It explores new development models of new medical sciences in Guangzhou University.

According to the agreement, the first period of cooperation between the two sides will last for five years. The joint Research Institute will coordinate the scientific research strengths of both sides in life science and clinical medicine and form a research team comprised of around 200 staff members, 100 of whom will be full-time research and teaching staff (including postdoctoral staff). According to the framework, the two parties plan to set up the Gene Editing and Gene Therapy Institute, the Bioinformatics and Precision Therapy Institute, the Brain Science and Psychotherapy institute, the Biomedical Institute, the Clinical Research Center for Advanced Diagnostics and Advanced Treatment and the National Drug Clinical Trial Centers. A certain number of PI research teams will be established in every institute (center).

Experts of the two sides will supervise around 100 students in life sciences and clinical medicine annually.
