The following three disciplines of Guangzhou University were listed as the key disciplines in the development of higher-level universities in the Guangdong Province- Civil Engineering and Architecture, Regional Water and Water Ecological protection and Mathematics and Information Science. These three discipline fields enjoy a comprehensive education and teaching system, a strong research infrastructure and facilities, and excellent teaching and research faculty. For many years, Guangzhou University has developed a great number of talents, many of whom have worked on both national-and-provincial-level programs that are already bringing great social and economic benefit.
1. Civil Engineering and Architecture Discipline
This discipline field includes: civil engineering, mechanical engineering, architecture, rural and urban planning and business administration. All of these disciplines have been developed for years and resulted in many successes. Civil engineering belongs to the first level discipline. Architecture is a feature and key discipline of the Guangdong province. Mechanical engineering and business administration received large support from the Guangzhou Municipal government. Architecture, rural and urban planning and business administration are among the first level disciplines authorized to offer master’s degrees. Civil engineering belongs to the first level discipline that is authorized to offer Doctor’s degrees, Post-Doctor’s degrees and has a center for Post-doctoral studies.
Achievements include winning major national key research projects and national and provincial scientific and technological advancements awards. These achievements have been widely used in the design and construction of the Hong Kong-Macao-Zhuhai Bridge, the Imperial Palace and the underground construction of cities.
2. Regional Water and Water Ecological protection Discipline
Centering upon environmental science and ecology of the ESI, the Regional Water and Water Ecological Protection Discipline has driven the development of many other disciplines to include environmental science and engineering, chemistry science and technology, chemistry, geography, water supply and drainage. This has pushed the development of our university disciplines to a higher level. Constant improvement and integration have formed a comprehensive research and discipline system that integrates environmental science and ecology as related to liberal arts, science and engineering.
Achievements include winning three first prizes in international Mathematical Contest in Modeling.
3. Mathematics and Information Science Discipline
Under this discipline, the following four teaching areas are offered - mathematics, accounting, computer science and technology and biology. Mathematics and accounting are the major two disciplines. There is now a first level discipline that is authorized to offer Doctor’s degree and a center for post-doctoral studies. This discipline has won a series of major projects which are financially supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and facilitate the integration of various disciplines.
Achievements include introducing 21 high-level experts from the National Outstanding Youth and the Thousand Person Plan, building five new platforms, building cooperation centers with Linkoping University, and winning three provincial level awards.
