Yan Ni, He Canhui, Liang Yuanyi, Wen Piao, and Gao Yan, Guangzhou University students from the School of Law and the School of Humanities won the award for the "Second Best Reviewing State" during The 2024 Padova Model UPR (Universal Periodic Review) competition hosted by the University of Padova and supported by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
The Padova Model UPR competition accurately simulates the Universal Periodic Review mechanism of the United Nations Human Rights Council, providing a significant opportunity to delve into its operational processes, diplomatic norms, and the core tenets of international human rights law. The event was co-hosted by the Faculty of Political Science, Law, and International Studies at the University of Padova and the Human Rights Center, with substantial support from the OHCHR and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The judging panel comprised key officials and senior officers from the OHCHR's UPR department, ensuring the fairness and authority of the evaluation. Numerous undergraduate, graduate students, and human rights experts from universities and professional organizations around the world participated eagerly. The 18 teams in the finals included 6 from national delegations, 6 from NGOs, and 6 from national human rights institutions, providing participants with a high-level platform to hone their diplomatic negotiation skills and study international human rights mechanisms.
