President Yu Leads the Delegation of Guangdong Key Universities’ Presidents to US for Training

Guangzhou University, March. 9, 2012:Guangdong Education Department has recently organized a 21-day training program for the presidents of the key provincial universities to the United States, aiming to enhance education internationalization and foster international exchange and cooperation. The training delegation is composed of presidents and vice presidents of sixteen key provincial universities, such as South China Normal University, South China University of Agriculture, Southern Medical University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, as well as officials in the Education Department. Entrusted by the Education Department, Mr. Yu Jianshe, President of Guangzhou University, is selected as the leader of the delegation and the International Communication Department of Guangzhou University is selected to take charge of the coordination for the delegation in US. The delegation achieved great success in the training which ended on February 28th.

The delegation visit the National Education Ministry of American, the House of Senate in California, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation in Western America, California Higher Education System, California State-Run Higher Education System, the University of Maryland, George Washington University, Columbia University, and other government agencies and higher education institutions. The delegates attend lectures to have better understanding of the challenges, opportunities, and problems for the current education cooperation between China and US, thus contributing to new ideas and new direction for the further development of higher education in China. As it is, President Yu of GU conducts insightful research on Sino-US education cooperation and introduced GU’s cooperation with its US counterparts, in particular the new path of teacher and student exchange program and new ideas for the next step of internationalization of GU.

The President of GU is meeting the alumni in Western America

During the training in San Francisco, President Yu meets GU alumni in Western America, including Fang Chuangjie, Su Kaihong, Lei Huaqin who graduated from GU in the 1990s and now important figures in the local American community. Totally 90 alumni join the occasion to welcome President Yu. When making a speech, President Yu extends his sincere gratitude to the alumni for their concern and contribution to the development of GU, and he welcomes them back to campus to recollect memory and propose ideas for the school’s better development. The alumni claim to be proud of the achievement of GU and will be back later this year.

Learning the management and financial allotment system in the University of California

President Yu advocates that the universities in the delegation should conduct cooperation with San Jose State University and other American universities. GU has signed cooperation agreement with San Jose State University and Mount Saint Vincent University so as to conduct more cooperation in teaching, research and student exchange. For the record, San Jose State University is located in the core area of the Silicon Valley, topping the undergraduate education in US, while Mount Saint Vincent University was founded in 1847 and now is a famous university in the eastern part of US. In addition, GU has built cooperation relation with San Francisco Sino-US Exchange Association and US Future Star Education Group to explore more opportunities for further partnership in more areas.

All the members in the delegation agree that the training in US is eye-opening and highly rewarding, inspiring them to do a better job in higher education internationalization in the future.
