“973 Project” Kicks Off in GU

As the initiator of the national “973 Project”, GU holds the kick-off meeting of the sub-project “Earthquake Damage Mechanism and Full Life-Circle Functionality Design and Control for Traffic Engineering Projects in the Near-Coast Area”. Presided by the Vice President Prof. Chen Yongken, the meeting invites distinguished academicians Wang Jingquan, Zheng Yingren and Zhou Fulin from China Engineering, scholars from the Project Expert Team, as well as Deputy Director Lei Zhongliang from Guangzhou Education Bureau.

During his speech, Deputy Director Lei Zhongliang said, “It is a big day of significance for GU to kick off the project. Guangzhou People’s Government and CPC Party Commission have been supporting GU to seek academic growth, and so has Guangzhou Education Bureau.” During the past decade, GU has won recognition from the academic circle, and the current project stands testimony to its excellent achievement. The local authorities wish that GU can take advantage of this project and make more progress, so it can fulfill its vision to be a well-known higher education institution at home and abroad.

“973 Project” is the most important and influential R&D science project in China led by academician Prof. Zhou Fulin and co-hosted by 11 science and higher education institutions such as Tianjing University, Beijing Industry University, Dalian Polytechnic University and Engineering Dynamic Institute of China Earthquake Bureau. The project is initiated by GU, studying the engineering projects in near-coast area. With the total research fund of 34 million yuan, the project will look into the solutions of the following issues: seismic change on the land of China, damage to the engineering projects in the near-coast area caused by earthquake from the ocean, functional and spatial allocation features, earthquake effects on the complex project field in the near-coast area, earthquake damage mechanism of the key traffic projects in the near-coast area, anti-quake functionality, failure mode and quake reduction control.
