Arts in Life- Chinese Folk Ceramic Exhibited in Wesleyan College

On December 3, Chinese folk Pottery Exhibition was held in Gallery of Wesleyan University. Dr. Margaret Carney, the prestigious historian on ceramics, Ms. Lisa Sloben, Director of Department of Convention and Exhibition, several senior professors, faculty from Confucius Institute and citizens who are of great interest in Chinese art attended the unveiling ceremony.

Ceramics contains rich cultural messages. Blue and white porcelain prevailed in Europe since the ancient times and then became the symbol of China. The word “china”, representing the People’s Republic of China, is still used now. Confucius Institute at Wesleyan College was the first one to launch Chinese Ceramic Exhibition in the hope of enriching the forms of cultural transmission and help people to learn about Chinese culture.

Lecture of “Appreciation of Chinese Ceramics”

With the subject of “Art in Life”, this Ceramic Exhibition displayed potteries used in daily life in around two hundred years, including Jiangxi Porcelain Bowl and Jiangsu Fish-pattern Basin. People’s wisdom and expertise reflected by these items impressed the audiences. At the invitation of Confucius Institute at Wesleyan College, Dr. Margaret Carney gave a lecture entitled “Appreciation of Chinese Ceramic”. Starting from the differences between Guanware and folk kiln, she focused on craft features and art values of folk kiln, guiding the audience to appreciate and understand Chinese culture.

This ceramic exhibition will be held though January 5, 2016, in the hope of bringing more people to know Chinese ceramic art.
