The 3rd National Workshop on Regional Music Culture Study in Higher Education Institutions held in GU

Guangzhou University, November 14, 2013:The 3rd National Workshop on Regional Music Culture Study in Higher Education Institutions was held in GU. Leaders from the two co-organizers—Deng Chengming, vice president of GZU and Song Fei, vice president of China Academy of Music and a famous Erhu player—addressed on the opening ceremony respectively.

More than 160 delegates from 75 institutions attended the workshop, including domestic professional music institutions, comprehensive colleges of art, comprehensive universities and editorial department of music journals. Totally 133 papers were submitted, 37 of which were presented.

During the workshop, nine experts, Zhao Songguang, Qiao Jianzhong, Feng Mingyang, Xie Jiaxing, Cai Jizhou, Yang Minkang, Du Yaxiong, Tian Kewen and Tian Yaonong made wonderful keynote speeches. Keynote speeches of experts and forums for postgraduate students are the highlight of the workshop. This innovative arrangement was highly praised and affirmed by Qiao Jianzhong, Research Fellow and previous director of Institution of Music of China Academy of Art Research.

In group meetings, participants carried out in-depth discussion on six topics, including Traditional Music Teaching in Colleges and Universities and Regional Music Education Research, Mining and Inheriting Regional Traditional Music Resources, Theories and Methods of Regional Music Research, Case Study on Regional Music, Multidisciplinary Perspectives and Regional Music Research, and Forum for Postgraduates. In the meanwhile, the participating experts and representatives expressed approval to our School of Music and Dance on its practice of making the research of Lingnan traditional music and dance the direction of its discipline development, including the research of Lingnan traditional music and dance culture into the MA thesis topic selection, and leading postgraduates on in-depth field research in the countryside.

The success of the workshop, which has provided a platform for experts and scholars from all over the country to share their latest discoveries and research on regional music culture, is of profound significance in promoting the research on theories and practice of regional music.
