Drawing in and Going Global- Confucius Institute at Wesleyan College Hosts Cultural Lectures

Recently, Confucius Institute at Wesleyan College both hosted and delivered cultural lectures at others’ invitation. The form of the lectures, which combined “drawing in” with “going out”, drew great interest from the audiences. The academic lectures deepened understanding of Chinese culture and scholarship.

On October 2, Professor Ye Tan, Dean of the Confucius Institute at University of South Carolina with a renowned reputation in comparative drama, gave an excellent lecture on “Wu Tianming and His Film”, which gave a new perspective for interpreting Chinese culture through the arts.

The lecture introduced a prominent Chinese film director, Wu Tianming, and the background, themes and social response of 14 of his most representative films from 1979 to 2012. Using some films as examples, Professor Ye dissected the implication of China as “The True, The Good and The Beautiful”. He also analyzed the cultural connotation and cultural context of Chinese films by comparing Chinese and Western films. Professor Ye’s lecture sparked discussion with the attending students and faculty of the Confucius Institute at Wesleyan College, as well as members from the Macon Film Guild.

On October 6, Professor Jiang Xiaoping, Dean of the Confucius Institute at Wesleyan College, held a lecture for a local educational charity at the invitation of Ms. Hannah Allen, Trustee of Wesleyan College. Professor Jiang gave an introduction to China and the Confucius Institute and drew comparisons with the U.S. Dr. Jiang expounded on the development of the Confucius Institute at Wesleyan College over the last two years, and also made a contrast with the other five Confucius Institutes in state of Georgia. The lecture gave the audience a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and the mission of the Confucius Institute.
