Guangzhou University, April 24th, 2012: the launching ceremony of English Learning Activity Series-"Unlimited Horizon, Breathtaking Achievement", organized by School of Foreign Studies are held in the library plaza. Ms. Chen Shuang, Vice President of GU, attended the openning ceremony with directors of School of International Education and other relevant departments.
Ms. Chen Shuang pointed it out in her opening remarks that internationalization is not only an important part of GU's 12th Five Year Plan but also an important initiative to promote education of GU to an international level. This year, GU has identified the strategic goal of ensuring the 20% of the students to study abroad in 4 years, to promote the idea of "Student-Center Education" and the internationalization of GU with the essence of serving the students. She also hope that the English learning series will be a regular event in GU, thus becoming a new brand and highlight of the campus culture, and that English proficiency will be a distinctive advantage of students in GU. Ms. Chen also elaborated on the importance of English learning in English to encourage students to learn the language.
Xiong Jialin, a senior from School of Foreign Studies who has returned from the States read the letter of appeal of the event and shared his experience as an exchange student in South Carolina, US.

After the launching ceremony, a foreign language carnival was held, which includes an introduction of the events, English corner, Educational games for English learning, mock interviews of overseas universities etc. The officials of GU played the games with the students which included quiz of culture and geography. They later gave the prizes they won to the students who helped to organize the event to thank them for their brilliant work. Overseas studies and short-term study programs of some foreign universities were also introduced to the participants in the carnival.
Lasting for 50 days from April 24th to June 12th, this event is divided into five sections - Speaking, Tests, Reading, Exchanges and Programs, aiming at expanding the students' international horizon and create an English learning atmosphere in GU and help to promote the idea of "internationalization of GU". During the 50 days, workshops aiming at helping the students to improve English speaking will be held; English majors will tutor their non-English major peers for the CET-4 and CET-6 exams; an outdoor orienteering activity to promote English learning will also be held. Besides, a campaign of short-term and long-term overseas studies programs as well as IELTS lectures will be held.
