Joint Sustainable Urban Development Research Center Founded Contemporary Urban Development Challenges to Be Tackled

On November 27, Chen Jianhua, mayor of Guangzhou, officially met Paul Lendva, mayor of international friendship cities Linkoping of Sweden in Baiyun International Convention Center. The president of our university, Zou Cairong, and director of Guangzhou Foreign Affairs Office Liu Baochun attended the meeting. In witness of Mayor Chen and Mayor Paul Lendva, Zou, on behalf of Guangzhou Univesity, and Lais, representing Linkoping University, signed a cooperation contract, which specified the establishment ofGuangzhouUniversity- Linkoping University Urban Sustainable Development Research centre through joint efforts.

Mayor Chen pointed out that fruits of collaboration had been harvested in many fields since Guangzhou andLinkopingbecame sister cities. He added that Guangzhou strove to adhere to the people-oriented concept in urban sustainable development, dedicate to protecting the ecological environment, and promote the innovation in the city and urban construction, though the condition of Guangzhou might differ. Guangzhou was facing various problems in sustainable development. Nevertheless, Linkoping had experience in this aspect. The mayor hoped that with the cooperation of two universities, the sustainable development in the field of science and technology research could be vigorously promoted, and this occasion be regarded as an opportunity to conduct more extensive cooperation in more fields.

It was reported that these two public comprehensive universities reached a consensus under the impetus of international friendly city: modern cities all universally encountered dilemma in sustainable development, and the study of related technology & policy would contribute to the city development and residents' well-being. To found the "sustainable development research center" was to make the utmost use of the bilateral advantages, especially the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary experience of enterprise cooperation on the part of Linkoping University. This move can utilize the resources of government, enterprises, research institutes and thus promote the application of sustainable development technology in Guangzhou city.
