Recently, the Confucius Institute at Padua University held a lecture about traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) entitled “What Can Acupuncture Do for You?” The attendees included local medical professionals, students and faculty of University of Padua, and those interested in TCM and Chinese culture.
Doctor Liu Huaiyu delivered a keynote speech on the theory and application of acupuncture therapy in disease prevention and treatment through analysis on clinical cases, including the contrast between TCM and Western medicine, the distinct curative effects of acupuncture, TCM’s modern values, as well as its diagnostic methods. Doctor Liu introduced the concept “Qi” in TCM to explain the theory of disease treatment. He also pointed out that TCM therapy averts the side effects of chemicals, so as to be less harmful to people. By elaborating on the illnesses Western diets may cause, he proposed the diet principle of “warming up the five internal organs (heart, liver, spleen, lungs and kidneys)” which recommends people drink hot water and eat hot dishes.
This lecture gave an introduction of TCM’s function in disease prevention and treatment and propelled the promotion of Chinese culture in Padua.
