Introduction of Education Studies

The School of Education (Teachers College) has a long history. The school currently has a mobile center for post-doctoral studies in education and offers level-one PhD programs, Doctor of Education degrees, a level-one master's degree in education and professional degrees of Master of Education.

In 1953, relevant courses on education and training of teachers were initiated. The discipline of education for undergraduate students was started in 1978 and the postgraduate program was started in 1987. In 1995, the school began to offer master's degrees in two level-two disciplines to include the principles of education and the curriculum and teaching theory. The school started to offer the professional degree of Master of Education in 2005 and part-time postgraduate programs for teachers in higher education institutions in 2006. In 2010, a Master degree of level-one disciplines and the doctoral degree of level-one discipline began to be conferred in 2018. In 2019, a mobile center for post-doctoral studies in education was approved. The Education Studies was awarded as the Key Supporting Subject of Guangzhou City in 2011 and the Key Advantageous Discipline of Guangdong Province in 2012. A provincial key platform for higher education institutions of Guangdong Province, a collaborative innovation platform of Guangzhou City and an educational policy research center jointly with National Pingtung University of Education were established under Education Studies.

Under the program for a level-one doctoral degree in education, four areas were provided which include higher education, education economics and policies, curriculum and teaching theory, and educational psychology and student's development. Under the Doctor of Education program, there are three fields to include educational leadership and management and student's development and education, and teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages. Under the program for level-one master degree in education, six research areas are offered to include higher education, principles of education, education economics and policies, preschool education, curriculum and teaching theory, and educational technology studies. Four areas are provided undergraduate studies which include primary school education, preschool education, special education, and educational technology studies.

Education Studies has a faculty team of 51 members to include 18 professors, 20 associate professors, 31 doctors, seven PhD supervisors, 36 master's supervisors and 11 members with overseas experience. The team leader is Professor Liu Hui. Among the members of the faculty, there is one member from the Subject Review Group under the Third Academic Degree Commission of the State Council, one expert receiving a special allowance from the State Council, three provincial training talents of the "Thousand-Hundred-Ten Program" of Guangdong Province, three training talents of the "Thousand-Hundred-Ten Talents" of the Ideological Propaganda Front of Guangdong Province, one excellent teaching faculty of Guangdong Province, and one training talent of excellent young teachers from higher education institutions of Guangdong Province. The team of Education studies has one teaching team of Guangdong Province, one innovative and academic team of Guangzhou City, one excellent expert of Guangzhou City, one scholar of the City of Guangzhou, one young and middle-aged talent for philosophy and social science in Guangzhou City, and one member from the third level of "121" talents in Guangzhou City.

In recent years, faulty have undertaken over 70 research projects under the discipline, with nearly RMB5.5 million of research funds. More than 180 papers were published in academic journals to include the Educational Research, and 45 books as well as textbooks were published. Faculty have won multiple honors and prizes to include four prizes of the National Excellent Achievement in Educational Technology from the Ministry of Education, 13 prizes of the Excellent Achievement in Philosophy and Social Science of Guangdong Province, and six prizes of the Excellent Achievement in Philosophy and Social Science of Guangzhou City.

Introduction of Psychology Studies

Psychology Studies of Guangzhou University has a long history. In 1984, Guangzhou University obtained the qualification to offer the program for master's degree in "Social Science", which was the first of its kind in China. Psychology Studies is currently a key and advantageous level-one discipline of Guangdong Province with Pearl River Scholars serving in key positions. There are programs for level-one master degree in psychology and professional degree of Master of Applied Psychology.

Under Psychology Studies, there are three level-two disciplines to include general psychology, developmental and educational psychology and applied psychology, and one program for undergraduate studies which is applied psychology. Applied psychology is a comprehensive pilot program for reform of Guangdong Province. The laboratory, with an area of nearly 800 square meters, is regarded as a key laboratory of philosophy and social science for higher education institutions in Guangdong Province. Featuring a large number of advanced devices for research and teaching to include the ERP, eye trackers and near infrared spectroscopy, laboratory devices are valued at nearly 15 million RMB.

The faculty team of Psychology Studies has 34 members to include 13 professors, 12 associate professors, 29 doctorate degree holders, seven doctoral supervisors, and 22 master's supervisors. The team leader is Professor Ye Haosheng. Among the faculty members of Psychology Studies, there is one Pearl River Scholar, 15 members with overseas experience, one expert receiving a special allowance from the State Council, two provincial training talents from the "Thousand-Hundred-Ten Program" of Guangdong Province, two training talents from the "Thousand-Hundred-Ten Talents" of the Ideological Propaganda Front of Guangdong Province, and one training talent of excellent young teachers from higher education institutions of Guangdong Province. There are two teaching teams of Guangdong Province, one provincial quality resources-sharing course, one innovative and academic team of Guangzhou City, three scholars of the City of Guangzhou, and two young and middle-aged talents for philosophy and social science in Guangzhou. Faculty members have played a leading role in compiling five national planning textbooks.

Over the past five years, faculty have undertaken over 60 research projects to include seven projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, five projects of the National Social Science Fund of China, 15 projects of the Ministry of Education, 13 provincial projects and 23 other longitudinal projects at department and bureau levels. The funds of long-term projects total over 7 million RMB. More than 150 papers were published in journals to include the Acta Psychologica Sinica and the SCI/SSCI journals, There have been 18 books as well as textbooks compiled and published. Faculty have won multiple honors and prizes to include three prizes of the National Excellent Achievement in Educational Technology and 15 prizes of the Excellent Achievement in Philosophy and Social Science of Guangdong Province.

To better serve the local economic, social and educational development of Guangdong Province and strengthen the research on application of psychology, a faculty team of Psychological Studies collaborated with Guangzhou Municipal Education Bureau and the Civilization Office and established the "Educational and Guiding (Training) Center of Mental Health for Middle and Primary Schools of Guangzhou City" and the "Guangzhou Juvenile Psychological Counseling and Assistance Center". More than 80,000 primary and middle school teachers in Guangzhou City took part in the training program and the university was awarded the "Award of Ideological and Moral Education Practice for Minors in Guangdong Province".
