Energy Dissipation and Seismic Isolation of Hongkong-Zhuhai- Macao (HZM) Bridge in China

The HZM Bridge is the largest sea-crossing bridge in the world with a length of approximately 50 kilometers. The HZM Bridge is a major transportation link connecting the Hongkong Special Administrative Region, Zhuhai City of Guangdong province and Macao Special Administrative Region. It is also an important construction project in the National Highway System Plan. The HZM Bridge connects the western highway system of the Guangdong Province by the Tai-ao high speed highway, forming a rapid and convenient transportation link between Hong Kong, Macao, and southwestern regions of China. This connection is significant because it makes full use of regional advantages, diversification development of large areas and it promotes industrial restructuring of Zhujiang Delta. The Research team of the Earthquake Engineering and Research Testing Center of Guangzhou University proposed the seismic isolation design method of HZM Bridge which adopted 1,500 isolation bearings including the largest high damping rubber bearing in the world.

Seismic Isolation Research of Historical Relic in National Palace Museum and Xi'an Stele Forest Museum of China

The Earthquake Engineering and Research Testing Center (EERTC) of Guangzhou University has conducted a great amount of fundamental research and engineering application in the seismic protection of historical architectures and cultural relics. Recognized by the National Administration of Cultural Heritage, the seismic isolation techniques of EERTC have been successfully applied to the National Palace Museum and Xi'an Stele Forest Museum for seismic isolation of cultural relics.

The National Palace Museum was constructed within the imperial palace in two consecutive dynasties - the Ming (1368-1644) and the Qing (1644-1911). It is one of the most famous and prestigious museums in China and the world. The seismic isolation technology of historical relic in National Palace Museum was awarded the Technical Progress Award for world architectures in 2017.

Seismic Design and Performance Optimization Research of the Panama Canal 3rd Bridge

The Panama Canal, which is located in the middle of the Republic of Panama, is an important shipping route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The length of the Canal is 81.3 kilometers, the width is 150 to 304 meters and the depth is 13 to 15 meters. The water level in the Canal is 26 meters higher than that of the two nearby oceans and it possesses 6 navigation locks. The project of Panama Canal 3rd Bridge is near Cologne and it will be constructed to cross the Canal. A research team of EERTC of Guangzhou University utilized the energy dissipation device in protecting the Panama Canal 3rd Bridge in the event of a rare earthquake. This project is the first project in America obtained by international bidding.
