Guangzhou University adds 13th ESI Top 1% discipline globally

Guangzhou University (GZHU) has reached a new milestone in its academic development, with its Economics & Business discipline entering the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) global top 1% for the first time, according to the latest data released by Clarivate on July 9, 2026.The achievement marks the university's 13th ESI top 1% discipline, signifying a landmark breakthrough in the field of economics and business studies.

Since Engineering first broke into the ESI top 1% in 2018, GZHU has sustained remarkable momentum in discipline development. Twelve additional disciplines have subsequently joined the prestigious ranking, including Computer Science, Chemistry, Materials Science, and Environment/Ecology. Notably, Engineering has ascended to the global top 0.5‰, while four disciplines — led by Computer Science — have advanced into the global top 2‰. The university's international academic influence has been significantly elevated as a result.

In recent years, GZHU has closely aligned its development with national strategies and the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Through its "2+5" Discipline and Research Innovation Platform Program, the university has cultivated a well-structured discipline ecosystem featuring both peak-leading disciplines and solid plateau support. This strategic layout has laid a firm foundation for its bid for the national Double First-Class initiative.
