From May 24 to 30, a Guangzhou University (GZHU) delegation led by Dr.Ouyang Qian, chairman of the University Council, made an official visit to New Zealand and Australia. The delegation paid a courtesy call on the Chinese Consulate General in Auckland and visited five world-renowned institutions—the University of Auckland, Monash University, the University of Melbourne, the University of Queensland and the University of Sydney—signing multiple cooperation agreements and reaching broad consensus on a range of collaborative initiatives.
During the New Zealand leg, the delegation introduced the Alliance of Guangzhou International Sister-city Universities (GISU) to the Consulate General and received positive feedback for practical cooperation across multiple fields. GU signed a Letter of Intent for Cooperation with the University of Auckland to advance joint research and collaborative talent cultivation in area studies, environmental governance and other areas. The delegation also met with local academicians and scholars, toured cutting-edge laboratories, and introduced GZHU's talent recruitment policies to Chinese international students.
In Australia, the delegation focused on upgrading and expanding institutional partnerships. GU consolidated its existing 2+2 joint undergraduate programs with Monash University and explored the possibility of joint master's and doctoral programs. The University of Melbourne and GU reached consensus on frontier research collaboration and co-hosting high-level international conferences. GZHU signed an extended 2+2 undergraduate double-degree agreement with the University of Queensland in computer science and environmental engineering. The delegation also held its first official talks with the University of Sydney, exploring joint research platforms and doctoral training in engineering and computer science.
The visit has significantly expanded GZHU's high-level education cooperation network in Oceania and deepened practical collaboration with leading universities in joint research and talent cultivation. These efforts align with China's strategy of opening up the education sector and contribute to people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China, New Zealand and Australia. GZHU remains committed to open education and will continue to bolster its capacity for international engagement.
Chinese
