GU Signs Collaboration Agreements with HKUST to Establish HKUST (Guangzhou)

On  December 21, Guangzhou Municipal Government, Guangzhou University (GU) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) officially signed agreements to establish Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST, Guangzhou). The collaboration agreements were signed by Mr. Wen Guohui, Mayor of the Guangzhou Municipal Government; Prof. Wei SHYY, President of HKUST; and Prof. Wei Minghai, President of GU under the witness of Mr. Zhang Shuofu, Secretary of the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee; Mr. Andrew Liao Cheung-Sing, Chairman of the HKUST Council; Mr. Huang Ningsheng, Vice Governor of Guangdong Provincial Government; Prof. Li Lu, Director-General for Educational Scientific and Technological Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in HKSAR; Mr. Huang Guang, Inspector of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, Exchange Division of the State Council; Mr. Li Hai, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchange of the Ministry of Education; Dr. Choi Yuk Lin, Under Secretary for Education of the HKSAR Government; Prof. Qu Shaobing, Chairman of GU Council and Prof. Guo Xingpeng,  Vice President of GU.

    

HKUST is a world-renowned research university with breakthroughs in physics, engineering, business administration, bioscience and biotechnology, and environment and sustainable development. In order to add forces to the Greater Bay Area (GBA), on  October 14 this year, GU signed a letter of intent on cooperation in running schools with HKUST. Occupying an area of 1.13 square kilometers, HKUST (Guangzhou) will be funded by Guangzhou Municipal government in its entire construction cost and operating budget. HKUST Council will give full support in running the school.

        

The three parties will push forward student recruitment in HKUST (Guangzhou) and develop it in compliance with international standards. Collaboration in education, science and technology, business and management as well as knowledge transfer was agreed to be strengthened to provide talent support for the development of Guangzhou and GBA.
