GU Designs Seismic Isolation for Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge

On the morning of October 23, the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge was held in Zhuhai, Guangdong. President Xi Jinping attended the ceremony and announced the official opening of the bridge. As a cross-sea ocean about 55 kilometers, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge connects Hong Kong to the east and Zhuhai and Macau to the west. It is the first cross-sea passage in China that integrates bridges, double artificial islands and tunnels. It is the first time for Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao to jointly construct the ultra-large cross-sea bridge.

Led by Academician Zhou Fulin of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Guangzhou University Engineering Earthquake Research Center is responsible for the bridge’s seismic isolation and shock absorption design.

"This project (the seismic isolation and shock absorption project of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge) means that the earthquake isolation and shock absorption of bridges in our country has reached the world's leading level." Academician Zhou Fulin said that GU technical team has worked on the project for 10 years, from formulating the plan, analysis and calculation, the whole bridge model test, the single bridge model test, the isolation and vibration damping device test to the overall technical summary. With the use of the world's most advanced and state-of-the-art technology, the seismic safety of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge has increased significantly, from 7 degrees to 9 degrees. At the same time, the cost has been reduced, and the number of piles under the pier has been reduced by 20%.
